What groundworks do we take on around Barnsley?

Everything between a bare field and a finished surface. On new build sites that means stripping and levelling, digging and pouring footings, laying drainage runs, bringing up the sub base for roads and parking, setting kerbs and putting the tarmac on top. On commercial premises it is car parks, bases, kerbing and palisade security fencing. For homeowners it is the same skills at a smaller scale: the foundations under an extension, the base under a garden room, the dig under a drive.

The photos on this page are all ours, taken on our own jobs. They show the stage most firms never photograph, the trench before the concrete and the stone before the tarmac, because that is the stage that decides whether a job lasts.

Groundwork we do

  • Site strip and levelling. Topsoil off and the site brought to formation level.
  • Foundations and footings. Trenches dug square and to depth, ready for inspection and the pour.
  • Drainage runs. Pipework laid to fall and chambers set before anything goes over the top.
  • Concrete slabs and bases. Membrane down, then poured and finished level.
  • Sub bases for roads, car parks and drives. Stone laid and compacted in layers.
  • Kerbing and edging. Kerb lines set to level for roads, car parks and footpaths.
  • Tarmac surfacing. Estate roads, car parks and footpaths.
  • Palisade and security fencing. Around industrial and commercial units.

Why does CHAS matter when you hire a groundworks contractor?

CHAS, the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme, independently checks a contractor's health and safety arrangements before they ever reach your site. Councils, public bodies and larger main contractors use it to pre-approve the firms in their supply chain, and because CHAS belongs to the SSIP group of schemes, the assessment is recognised by the other schemes in that group too. For you, that means one less set of paperwork to chase before we start.

Very few builders working on driveways and kitchens hold it. We do, so we can be approved onto the sites that require it.

Work that reaches the public highway

Kerbing, footpaths and crossings at the edge of a site often sit on the public highway, and working there needs NRSWA accreditation. We hold it, so the boundary work does not have to wait for a separate specialist. It is also what lets us build dropped kerbs for homeowners.

Can we work around your programme on a live site?

Our photos show roads and car parks going in on developments that were very much still under construction, with scaffolding up on the plots and wagons coming in. On a site like that the road has to stay passable for the next delivery and the drainage has to be in before the bricklayers need the ground. We are used to working to a programme on a live site, alongside other trades.

When something cannot wait, we move quickly:

"Liam accepted the job and attended within 2 hours, sourced and replaced new manhole."

Lauren, Halifax, on MyBuilder

"...helped me out on a big tarmac job at very short notice."

What helps us price a groundworks package

  • Drawings. Site layout, drainage and foundation details if you have them.
  • Levels. A topographic survey or the design levels.
  • The programme. When you need us on site and what has to be finished before the next trade.
  • The specification. Particularly for roads or footpaths that a highway authority will adopt.
  • Site access. Where machines and deliveries come in, and any restrictions.

A sketch and a phone call is enough to start with. The first visit and the estimate are free.

Groundworks for homeowners, as part of a bigger job

Homeowners rarely hire a groundworker directly. They hire a builder, and the builder usually brings one in. Because we are our own groundworkers, the foundations for your extension or renovation are dug by the firm building the walls on top of them, and the base under your new driveway is laid by the people who surface it. Nobody hands the job over halfway, and nobody can blame the last firm. From the first dig to the last worktop, it is one company.

Groundworks questions

  • Who checks foundations before the concrete goes in?

Building Control, either the council or a private approved inspector. In England they need to see the trenches once they are dug and before any concrete is poured, so they can check the depth and the ground. Pour before that visit and they can ask for the concrete to be dug back out, so the pour is always timed around the inspection.

  • Do you just dig, or do you finish the surface too?

We finish it. Our photos follow the same sites from a stone sub base through to kerbs and finished tarmac. Carrying a job right through means the levels at the end are the levels we set at the start, with no handover in the middle for anything to go wrong.

  • Can you provide company details for a supplier or pre-qualification form?

Yes. D.C.U Services Ltd is registered at Companies House under company number 15842254, and our CHAS accreditation covers the health and safety section most of those forms ask about. Ask for anything else your form needs when you call.

  • Will you travel for a commercial job?

Yes. Our work has taken us well beyond Barnsley, including an urgent commercial call-out in Halifax and jobs as far out as Keighley and Chesterfield. Tell us the site postcode and the dates and we will say straight away whether we can cover it.

Tell us what you are thinking of

It takes about a minute, and you do not need drawings or a budget worked out. We will come and look, and you will get a written price.
